Case Study: Institute for Brain and Mind University of California, San Diego – How Opto-Line’s custom pattern capabilities played a role in neuroscience research

Using 0.17mm thick glass coverslips, Opto-Line manufactured a unique, randomized pattern in 10um squares, deposited in evaporated gold. The coverslips were diced to a final part size of 0.4mm x 0.6mm.

These coverslips were placed on the head of the fruit fly to create a flat surface suitable for imaging.  “Brain imaging in fruit flies is widespread. But most conventional techniques require immobilizing the fly’s head under a microscope. Picture for a moment being asked to go on a first date strapped inside an fMRI scanner. It might be pretty hard to act natural (let alone charming). Fruit flies have had the same problem.”  Opto-Line was proud to be a part of this unusual Research and Development project.
